Modifications in old power plants design, gradual changes
in electromechanical relays behavior and vast increase in
network short circuit level and, moreover, availability
of numerical relays with versatile auxiliary functions reveals
the necessity for review and renewal of relay settings of
generating units and internal system. Niroo Pradazesh Kavir
signed a consultancy contact with the operator and maintenance
authority of Besat power plant to revise all the protection
setting and coordination of three generating units, internal
network and DC system in 2011. The system was studied during
four separate phases i.e. data collection and validation,
modeling and simulation of the system in steady state, review
of current protection status and shortcomings and recommendation
for new relays and settings.
